What Are Booklice and Why Do They Appear?
Booklice are tiny, pale insects that feed on mould, and their appearance almost always points to a damp or humid problem somewhere in the property.

Cockington has older cottages, thatched roofs and plenty of homes sitting close to parkland, and those are the sort of buildings where damp air can linger. If you have noticed tiny pale insects on shelves, in cupboards or around books and papers, they are very likely booklice. They are harmless to health, and we can clear them and help you stop them returning.
Our booklice control covers Cockington and the homes around it. We begin by looking at the room, its contents and how air moves through it, then talk you through what we found and what we propose before any treatment starts.
Thick walls, low ceilings and small windows keep an old cottage cosy, but they can also trap humidity. In Cockington, where many homes sit near trees, lawns and open parkland, the surrounding ground and vegetation can hold moisture against the walls for much of the year. A cupboard on an outside wall, a back bedroom or a boxed-up spare room can slowly develop a thin film of mould.
That mould is what booklice feed on, along with the glue and paper in old books, stored cardboard, wallpaper paste and open dry food. They are tiny, pale and quick, and they have nothing to do with lice on people. They do not bite or carry disease, but their numbers can build unnoticed until you open a box or move a bookcase and see them scatter.
We look first at where the insects were seen, then move through the nearby rooms, checking window frames, cold walls, the backs of wardrobes and any storage on the floor. Thatched and older properties can behave very differently from modern houses, so we pay attention to how each room breathes. We then explain what is feeding the insects and what we think is causing the damp in the house.
Treatment is targeted at the spots where the insects are living, and it is paired with practical changes. We suggest binning infested stored food and badly affected cardboard, wiping and drying mouldy surfaces, moving boxes off floors and away from outside walls, and improving ventilation where you can. In rooms that stay clammy, a dehumidifier makes a noticeable difference and helps the work last once the visit is over.
We cover Cockington, in the TQ2 postcode area, along with the neighbouring parts of Torquay and Paignton. Guest rooms and holiday lets that are shut for stretches of the year can be just as prone as family homes, so a simple airing routine often helps. We also cover Maidencombe, so if you are a little further out, ask and we will confirm.
They can be, if a room stays damp and still. The thatch itself is not the issue; it is humidity inside the house that matters. Good airflow, dry storage and a dehumidifier in a clammy room usually keep booklice away.
Booklice are tiny, pale and quick, usually about a millimetre or two long and found in groups. Silverfish are larger, silvery and shaped like a carrot with long bristles. Both like damp, but they need different handling, so we confirm which you have first.
Open a box in good light and look for tiny pale specks moving over the card or paper, especially if it feels slightly damp or smells musty. Tapping a sheet onto white paper can show them. If you see movement, call us and avoid moving the box around the house.
“We had a wasps nest in the ducting from the cooker hood to the extractor fan. Very tricky. Handled well and promptly by Stuart”
Gary Smith“Paul was open to our questions and knowledgeable about everything we asked. He laid traps for mice for us to check, himself checking them over a period of weeks til we were all sure there were no mice on the premises. A friendly and reliable service. Thankyou Stuart!”
Keith Fielder“I'm really happy with your service - I literally only saw one more flea after you visited, and none in the months since. I would give you a five star review. Great job!”
