What Are Booklice and Why Do They Appear?
Booklice are tiny, pale insects that feed on mould, and their appearance almost always points to a damp or humid problem somewhere in the property.

Tiny pale insects running across a shelf or the inside of a cupboard door are a common worry, and in Shaldon they are often booklice. They are not harmful to health and they do not bite, but they do show that a room is damp enough for mould to grow, which is the thing they feed on.
We treat booklice in Shaldon and the surrounding TQ14 area, working in cottages, holiday lets and family homes. We find where the moisture is coming from, treat the insects and explain how to keep things dry afterwards, even in an older building.
Shaldon is a village on the south side of the Teign estuary, opposite Teignmouth, and its older cottages often have thick walls that hold on to moisture. Add damp estuary air and rooms with very little through-draught, and you have the sort of conditions booklice enjoy. They feed on the faint mould that forms on paper, books, cardboard and wallpaper paste, particularly where air is slow to move.
Because the insects are tiny and pale, they can build up unseen in a bookcase, a seldom opened wardrobe or the back of a kitchen cupboard or a loft box. Often the first sign is a movement of tiny specks when you pick something up. They are unrelated to lice on people, and the name is simply a historic oddity. Nothing about them suggests a dirty home.
Shaldon has plenty of cottage holiday lets and homes that are not lived in all year round. Properties that stand empty through the quieter months can build up humidity quickly, particularly when windows stay shut and heating is off. Damp towels, bedding and stored paperwork all add to the problem, and booklice can settle in without anyone noticing, sometimes for several weeks at a time.
Owners often want a quiet, discreet fix, and we respect that, before the next guests arrive. When we visit in Shaldon we check the rooms around the sightings, the ventilation, condensation and anything stored in cupboards, and then explain what is needed. Sometimes that is simply drier habits and better storage, and sometimes a targeted treatment as well, and we will say which one it is.
Once we are sure the insects are booklice, we agree a plan with you. It usually includes opening up airflow, a dehumidifier in damper rooms, cleaning mould, throwing away infested stored food and soggy paper, and a targeted treatment where the insects gather. We also cover Teignmouth and Maidencombe as well as Shaldon. If an old wall needs repair, we will say so clearly.
They can be, because thick older walls hold moisture and rooms may have limited airflow. It does not mean the cottage is dirty or neglected. Keeping rooms ventilated, avoiding damp storage and tackling mould early usually keeps booklice from becoming a regular problem.
Take them seriously but calmly. They do not bite or harm health, yet guests may find them off-putting. Act promptly, dry the property, clear stored paper and food, and have the rooms treated if needed. We can arrange a visit around your changeover.
Vacuuming helps remove insects and mould spores from surfaces, and it is a sensible first step. On its own it rarely stops them coming back, though, because the damp remains. Drying the room and a targeted treatment give a longer lasting result.
