Carpet Beetle Damage: What to Look For
Carpet beetle damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on wool, fur, feathers and dust, and spotting it early makes the problem far easier to deal with.

Shaldon is a village on the south side of the Teign estuary, with older cottages, holiday lets and a village centre. Carpet beetles are a quiet pest and often unnoticed until a jumper, rug or blanket shows small holes. We can help you find and deal with them in Shaldon.
We inspect the property, work out where the larvae are living, treat that area and give you simple advice on washing and storage. You do not need to have worked out what the pest is before you call. Describe what you have seen, and we will take it from there.
Thick walls, uneven floors and boxed-in corners are charming, but they also trap fluff, dust and hair. In an older cottage, that debris collects under floorboards, behind skirting and in cupboards that are seldom emptied. For carpet beetle larvae, that is a steady, undisturbed meal. Carpet beetles are slow, so catching the signs early gives you far more options. Natural fibres left undisturbed for months are what they look for, whatever the age of the building.
We pay close attention to wool carpets, rugs and stair runners, as well as chimney alcoves and the roof space. Often the damage on show is only a small part of what is going on out of sight. Shaldon cottages often have wool carpets on staircases, and the treads and risers are a favourite hiding spot we always check. A careful look in the dark corners usually tells us more than the visible damage does.
Many Shaldon properties stand empty for stretches, then fill for a week or a weekend. During the empty periods, larvae feed on throws, rugs and the undersides of furniture, and the first sign is a guest finding damage or a beetle in the bath. None of this means the place is dirty, because larvae simply follow food that has been left alone. We would rather find the real source once than keep treating the symptoms.
If you let a cottage here, take a few minutes at changeover to look along carpet edges and inside wardrobes. If you find shed skins, give us a call. We will inspect, treat and tell you what to wash or seal away before the next guests arrive. Sealed storage and regular vacuuming along the edges make a real difference over time. Carpet beetles are slow, so catching the signs early gives you far more options.
In a village like Shaldon, many homes are close together, so we take care to keep our visit quiet and tidy. The village is small, but the approach is the same as in any town: inspect, find the source, treat it in a targeted way and explain how to vacuum and store textiles. We also cover Teignmouth and Newton Abbot, so we are close by whenever you need us. Please tell us about any pets, as we will plan the treatment around them.
No. They are attracted to natural fibres, hair and lint, and can settle in a spotless home. Older cottages simply have more hidden gaps where this material builds up. If you are unsure, describe what you have found and we will advise on the next step.
Start with wool rugs, carpet edges, woollen blankets, felt and anything with fur or feathers. Look underneath and at the edges rather than the visible surface, because larvae prefer dark, undisturbed places. We can talk you through it when we inspect, so you know what to do and what to leave alone.
Slowly in most cases. Larvae develop over weeks or months, so damage tends to grow gradually. Even so, early action protects your furnishings and stops the numbers building up in quiet rooms. Call us and we will give you a straight answer based on what we see in your property.
“Highly recommend Stuart. He was very efficient, effective, knowledgeable and reassuringly determined. We tried various methods beforehand to solve the problem ourselves but it took Stuart coming in to eradicate it. We wouldn’t use anybody else.”
