Signs of Bed Bugs and What to Do Next
Bed bugs are small, flat insects that hide close to where people sleep, and knowing the early signs helps you act before they spread through a home.

Bed bugs are not fussy about where they live. In Newton Abbot we are called to older terraces, newer estate homes, rented rooms and the occasional business with staff accommodation. If you are finding bite lines, tiny blood spots or dark flecks on bedding, a planned removal treatment will deal with the bugs and the places they hide.
Below is a plain account of the job: how to get ready, what happens when we arrive, and what comes afterwards, so that you can decide with a clear picture in front of you. We keep the language simple and the steps in order, with no scare stories, so that the day itself holds no surprises for you or your household.
Good preparation shortens the visit and improves the result. Strip the bed and seal bedding, pillows, throws and nearby clothing in bags. Wash on the hottest cycle the fabric allows, then tumble dry on high heat. Pull furniture a little way from the walls where you can do so safely, and clear the floor around the bed and the drawers beside it. A tidy room really does help.
Newton Abbot has a mix of older houses with gaps behind skirting and newer homes with fitted furniture, and both can hide bugs. Tell us if wardrobes are built in or beds have storage underneath, since these take extra time. Please avoid moving things from the affected room into the rest of the house, as that can spread the problem. Extra access now means fewer missed hiding places later.
We inspect first. The mattress seams and tags, the base, the headboard, the frame joints and the nearby furniture all get checked for live bugs, shed skins, eggs and droppings. This tells us how widespread the problem is and which rooms need attention, which matters in a house where someone may have slept on the sofa or in a spare bed. In a typical Newton Abbot home that might include the landing and any spare room.
Treatment follows, aimed at the cracks and joints where bed bugs shelter, rather than spread thinly everywhere. We keep you informed as we go, tell you how long to stay out of the room, and explain what to leave alone afterwards. Treated areas should not be wiped or vacuumed straight away, because that can remove what we have applied. We would rather you ask than guess.
About two weeks later we come back to check for survivors and newly hatched bugs, and treat again if needed. Until then, expect to see fewer bites, not none overnight. If you are in TQ12, we also cover Teignmouth, Shaldon and Totnes, so a Newton Abbot visit is easy to fit in. Keep luggage off beds, and inspect second-hand furniture before using it.
Look for blood spots on the sheets, tiny dark dots on mattress seams and pale shed skins, as well as bites in lines or clusters. Fleas tend to bite the ankles and mosquitoes leave single bites. If you are unsure, we will inspect and tell you honestly.
Not always. If bed bugs are confined to one bedroom, we focus there and check the rooms next to it. If someone has slept elsewhere, or you find signs in more than one room, we widen the treatment to match. We decide after the inspection.
You will need to keep out of the treated room while we work and until we say it is ready. Keep children and pets away, and follow the advice we give you at the end of the visit. Bagged bedding stays sealed until the room is cleared.
“Extinguished wasps in very large nest in our roof space. Prompt response to our phone call and job done effectively.”
Alison Falkner“Highly recommend Stuart. He was very efficient, effective, knowledgeable and reassuringly determined. We tried various methods beforehand to solve the problem ourselves but it took Stuart coming in to eradicate it. We wouldn’t use anybody else.”
Leanne Christie“Excellent service from Devon Pest Services. We had a wasp nest above our garage that was becoming a real concern for the family. They arrived on time, treated the nest efficiently and made sure everything was safe before leaving. Very professional, reasonably priced and great customer service throughout. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone in Exeter needing wasp nest removal.”
