Carpet Beetle Damage: What to Look For
Carpet beetle damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on wool, fur, feathers and dust, and spotting it early makes the problem far easier to deal with.

Carpet beetle larvae are easy to miss until the damage appears: a ragged carpet edge, a hole in a favourite cardigan, a scatter of small cast skins along a skirting board. If that sounds familiar, we can help. We carry out carpet beetle control in Sidford, starting with a proper look at where they are feeding.
Sidford is a village north of Sidmouth with a mix of older and newer homes along the River Sid valley, so the job varies from house to house. We explain what we find, agree a plan and price with you first, and then treat the source rather than just the symptoms.
Larvae look for dark, undisturbed corners with something to eat. Under beds and sofas, behind wardrobes, in airing cupboards and along the edges of fitted carpets are all favourites. They feed on wool, fur, feathers, silk, leather, pet hair and even dried food spilled in cupboards. Carpet beetles are slow, so catching the signs early gives you far more options. Natural fibres left undisturbed for months are what they look for, whatever the age of the building.
In a village home like those in Sidford, a loft can be a hidden source too. An old nest in the roof space or a pile of stored fabrics can keep a colony going for months, and the beetles then drift down into the living areas. Finding that starting point is the most important part of the job. A careful look in the dark corners usually tells us more than the visible damage does.
The first visit is an inspection. We check the likely hiding places, identify the insect so we are sure it is a carpet beetle, and show you any larvae or skins we find. Then we explain the plan in plain language and give you the price before starting. None of this means the place is dirty, because larvae simply follow food that has been left alone.
Treatment is targeted at the places where larvae are feeding, rather than spraying everything in sight. Alongside it we ask you to vacuum thoroughly, wash bedding and clothes hot where the label allows, and store spare woollens in sealed containers. Sidford customers often find the cleaning advice is what stops the problem returning. We would rather find the real source once than keep treating the symptoms.
Regular vacuuming along skirting boards and under furniture takes away the dust, hair and fibres the larvae live on. Check stored textiles now and then, and avoid leaving old nests in the roof or eaves. If you spot new signs in Sidford, give us a call; we also cover Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary nearby. We keep the visit tidy, explain what we find in plain terms and leave you with a clear idea of what to do next.
They are small, brownish and covered in short bristles, usually only a few millimetres long. You are more likely to spot their shed skins in corners and along skirting boards than the larvae themselves, as they avoid light. If you are unsure, describe what you have found and we will advise on the next step.
Cleanliness is not the cause. Beetles come in through windows or on items such as second-hand furniture, and feed on ordinary dust, hair and fibres. A tidy home can still have an undisturbed corner or loft that suits them. We can talk you through it when we inspect, so you know what to do and what to leave alone.
Often a single treatment plus good cleaning does the job, but it depends on how widespread the problem is. We will tell you during the inspection if we think a follow-up check is sensible, and we do not promise a result we cannot be sure of.
