What Attracts Cockroaches Into a Home or Kitchen
Cockroaches look for warmth, moisture, food and dark hiding places, so understanding what draws them in is the first step to keeping them out of your kitchen.

If you have spotted cockroaches in your Plymouth home, rented flat or kitchen, you want them gone and you want to know how they got there. We offer cockroach control across the city, covering the PL1 to PL9 postcodes, and we begin by working out where the insects are hiding and what is keeping them there.
Treatment is only part of it. We also point out the damp spots, gaps and food sources that let cockroaches stay, so the problem is less likely to come back.
Plymouth is a large coastal city with dense terraces, big estates, a working waterfront and a lot of rental homes. Each of those gives cockroaches something: warm walls, shared pipework, kitchens that are busy in the evening and bin areas that are used by many households. They seldom stay in one room, and they can use service gaps to move between neighbouring properties.
In older terraces we often find them behind kitchen units, under bath panels and around boilers, where it is warm and nobody looks. In flats the route is often a pipe run or a shared bin store. Telling us what you have seen and where helps us decide which areas to inspect first.
Across Plymouth we start by looking for evidence: droppings like coffee grounds or pepper, egg cases, a musty smell, and live insects when the lights go on at night. Monitoring traps can show which room is busiest. We then treat the harbourage areas with a targeted method chosen for the type of building, taking care around food, pets and children.
After the treatment we check progress, because cockroaches in hidden spaces do not all disappear on the first day. We will explain what to expect, what to leave alone and when to call us back. Cleaning behind and under appliances, fixing leaks and keeping food covered all help the treatment do its job.
Landlords and agents in Plymouth often ask us to deal with cockroaches before they spread through a house or block, and cafes and takeaways need quick, quiet help so that the kitchen can carry on working safely. We keep our advice practical and we write down what we find. Ivybridge and Dartmouth are also on our patch if your property is outside the city.
That depends on the tenancy and on how the problem started, so it is a matter between tenant and landlord. We can inspect, explain what we find and give a clear written account of the work, which usually helps both sides reach a sensible agreement.
Not necessarily. Cockroaches can arrive in deliveries, shared pipework or neighbouring properties and settle where it is warm and damp. Good cleaning helps, but even a spotless kitchen can have them if there are hidden gaps and warm voids.
You may see some activity for a little while as insects in hidden spots come out and are affected. We monitor over the following visits and tell you what is normal. If sightings carry on, tell us so we can look again.
“Paul was open to our questions and knowledgeable about everything we asked. He laid traps for mice for us to check, himself checking them over a period of weeks til we were all sure there were no mice on the premises. A friendly and reliable service. Thankyou Stuart!”
Keith Fielder“I'm really happy with your service - I literally only saw one more flea after you visited, and none in the months since. I would give you a five star review. Great job!”
Lucy Hines“Extinguished wasps in very large nest in our roof space. Prompt response to our phone call and job done effectively.”
