Carpet Beetle Damage: What to Look For
Carpet beetle damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on wool, fur, feathers and dust, and spotting it early makes the problem far easier to deal with.

Plymouth has a huge range of buildings, from dense terraces near the waterfront to large estates, and carpet beetles turn up in all of them. If you are finding bald patches in carpet, holes in wool or small bristly larvae, we can come and identify what is going on in your Plymouth home.
Our job is to find the real source, treat it in a targeted way and give you sensible advice so the problem does not simply come back next summer. You do not need to have worked out what the pest is before you call. Describe what you have seen, and we will take it from there.
Carpet beetle larvae like undisturbed spots with something to eat. In older terraced houses that often means the edges of fitted carpets, the dusty gap under skirting boards and the back of wardrobes. In larger family homes we also find them in airing cupboards and in spare rooms full of stored blankets. Carpet beetles are slow, so catching the signs early gives you far more options.
Lofts deserve a look as well. An old nest in the roof space, left behind by a previous occupant, can be a steady food source and a place from which beetles drift down into the rooms below. We check there when the signs point upwards. Natural fibres left undisturbed for months are what they look for, whatever the age of the building. A careful look in the dark corners usually tells us more than the visible damage does.
With so many rental homes in Plymouth, we are often called by tenants who have noticed the signs and by landlords who want it dealt with properly. Shared walls and shared stairways do not make carpet beetles spread the way some pests do, but furniture and stored textiles can carry them from room to room. None of this means the place is dirty, because larvae simply follow food that has been left alone.
If you rent, tell your landlord or agent as soon as you spot shed skins or damage. We can inspect and report what we find, and the cleaning steps we suggest are simple enough for any tenant to follow without special equipment. We would rather find the real source once than keep treating the symptoms. Sealed storage and regular vacuuming along the edges make a real difference over time.
We look at the places beetles favour, find where the larvae are feeding and treat those areas directly. We then talk you through vacuuming, hot washing and storing textiles in sealed bags. Our team also works in Ivybridge and Dartmouth, so we can reach most of the area around Plymouth. We keep the visit tidy, explain what we find in plain terms and leave you with a clear idea of what to do next.
Carpet beetle larvae are small, bristly and brown, and leave shed skins. Moth larvae leave silky webbing and tubes. Both eat wool, so it is easy to confuse them. If you are unsure, we can take a look and tell you which one you have.
They can. Second-hand rugs, upholstered pieces and old blankets sometimes carry larvae. It is worth vacuuming and inspecting these items carefully, particularly the seams and undersides, before you bring them into a bedroom or living room. If you are unsure, describe what you have found and we will advise on the next step.
Normally not. Treatment is targeted at the areas where the larvae are active, so we ask you to clear access to carpet edges, wardrobes and affected furniture. We will tell you exactly what to move when we have inspected. We can talk you through it when we inspect, so you know what to do and what to leave alone.
