Signs of Bed Bugs and What to Do Next
Bed bugs are small, flat insects that hide close to where people sleep, and knowing the early signs helps you act before they spread through a home.

Plymouth is a big city with a lot of shared housing, from dense terraces to flats near the waterfront, and bed bugs move easily between them. If you are finding small blood spots on your sheets or itchy bites in a line, we can remove the problem with a planned treatment of the bed, the room and the furniture around it.
Having bed bugs says nothing about how clean you are. They arrive on luggage, clothes and second-hand furniture, and the sooner they are dealt with, the easier the job becomes. Early action also stops them spreading to other rooms or to neighbours. Our visit is calm and practical, and we explain what we find in plain language, whether it turns out to be one room or several in a shared building.
The most useful thing you can do is bag and wash. Take bedding, pillow covers, throws and clothing from the affected room, seal them in bags, and wash them on the hottest setting the labels allow, followed by a hot tumble dry. Leave the mattress and bed frame where they are, but clear the floor and the bedside tables so we can get right up to the skirting.
In Plymouth's terraced streets and converted flats, bedrooms are often small and full, so it helps to pile spare items in the middle of the room rather than moving them through the house. If you share a wall with neighbours, let us know. Bed bugs can travel through gaps around pipes and floorboards, and we need to know where else to look.
We start by checking the mattress seams, the slats, the headboard and the cracks in the frame, then work outwards to bedside units, wardrobes, curtain rails and the edges of the carpet. This tells us how far the bugs have spread. Treatment is then applied to every place they hide, not just the bed, so that none are left behind. We never guess when we can look.
Most Plymouth jobs are a single bedroom, though some involve a whole flat or a house split into rooms. We explain what has been done, how long to leave the room alone, and what to avoid doing afterwards. A follow-up visit is booked a couple of weeks later, because eggs can hatch after the first treatment and we want to catch them.
Rented rooms, shared houses and short stays make bed bugs hard to trace to one source, so we keep the focus on solving the problem rather than blaming anyone. Landlords and managers should arrange for every affected room to be treated at the same time, otherwise the bugs simply move next door. We also cover Ivybridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth, and work across the PL1 to PL9 postcodes. Clear, early communication saves everyone time.
Usually not for long. You will need to stay out of the treated room for a short period, which we confirm on the day. Most people sleep in another room afterwards, as long as bedding from the treated room stays bagged until we say it is safe to use.
That depends on your tenancy and is for you and your landlord to agree. We can treat for either, and we will explain what we found and did in plain terms. It helps if everyone affected agrees a date, as treating only one room often fails.
You should see no new bites or fresh blood spots after the follow-up visit, and we check the usual hiding places again. If you do see signs later, contact us and we will look again. Using a mattress cover and checking seams regularly helps you spot problems early.
“Paul was open to our questions and knowledgeable about everything we asked. He laid traps for mice for us to check, himself checking them over a period of weeks til we were all sure there were no mice on the premises. A friendly and reliable service. Thankyou Stuart!”
Keith Fielder“I'm really happy with your service - I literally only saw one more flea after you visited, and none in the months since. I would give you a five star review. Great job!”
Lucy Hines“Extinguished wasps in very large nest in our roof space. Prompt response to our phone call and job done effectively.”
