Grey Squirrels in the Loft or Roof Space
Grey squirrels can move into a loft to nest and chew, and because of the damage and welfare issues involved, professional help is usually the safest route.

Crediton is a Mid Devon market town in the Creedy valley, with an older high street, newer housing and farmland close by. Wherever there are trees and gardens there are grey squirrels, and some of them end up in roof spaces. We survey, remove them by humane and lawful means, and block the route they used.
Not every squirrel problem is in the loft. Some people call us about chewed garden furniture, stripped bark, dug-up pots or raided feeders. We can look at all of it, tell you what is realistic, and focus first on whatever is causing the most trouble or risk at your property.
Older buildings around the centre of Crediton often have roofs with plenty of character and just as many gaps: loose slates, worn timber, old vents and chimney junctions. Squirrels exploit all of these. Houses on newer streets may have neater roofs, but trim boards and cheap mesh can be gnawed through surprisingly quickly.
The common factor is cover. Gardens with tall trees, hedges that join one plot to the next and walls that lead up to the roof create a highway. If your neighbour has had squirrels, it is worth checking your own roof edges before they find a way into yours.
We begin with a survey of the exterior and the loft to find the entry point, the nest and any damage. Then we agree the plan with you. Grey squirrels are subject to legal rules, so we use humane live-capture and other lawful methods and make sure each animal is dealt with properly.
Once the loft is clear, the proofing begins. We seal gaps, repair or protect damaged timber, and cover vulnerable points so squirrels in Crediton cannot simply return the same way. Sometimes there are several entry points, so we check the whole roofline and not only the spot where the noise was loudest.
In the garden, squirrels go after bulbs, seed feeders and fruit, and they strip bark from young trees. Netting, guards and tidier feeding stations can help. For the roof, keep branches trimmed and repair damage promptly. We also work in Exeter and Cullompton, and we are happy to talk through options for a Crediton property in EX17.
If it is heavy running or thumping at dawn or dusk, squirrels are a strong suspect. Light scratching at night is more likely mice. A loft inspection will confirm which, and show where the animals are getting in.
We can advise on it and, where appropriate, deal with the squirrels by lawful methods. Protecting bulbs with mesh or guards helps a lot. Roof and loft problems are usually more urgent because of damage to wiring and insulation.
They shred insulation, chew timber and may gnaw cables and pipes. Droppings and nesting material add to the mess. The longer they are there, the more damage is likely, so it is better not to leave a problem.
