How to Tell If You Have a Wasp Nest at Your Property
A wasp nest is often hidden in a loft, wall or shed, so knowing the early signs helps you act calmly before the colony grows.

Colyton is a historic village in the Axe valley, with older buildings and farmland all around. That means plenty of lofts, stone walls, outbuildings and hedgerows where wasps like to build. If you have spotted wasps vanishing into one gap, we can treat the nest and help you stop another starting.
We confirm the price with you before any work starts. It can depend on where the nest is and how easy it is to reach. Call 01392 590 140 or send an enquiry.
Keep your distance and keep children and pets back. Do not block the entrance, hit the nest or spray it from a ladder, because that can send wasps into your home or onto you. Call us, tell us what you have seen, and we will talk through the safest way to get it treated.
Older Colyton buildings often have thick walls with cracks, ageing pointing and roof timbers with gaps, all of which give a queen a way in during spring. Some nests end up in a wall cavity, others in a loft or under old tiles. The colony can stay out of sight for weeks until its traffic becomes obvious. Thick walls also mean that a nest can sound distant even when it sits right behind your plaster.
Signs include wasps flying to one point in the wall, a buzzing sound in a quiet room, or small pieces of chewed wood and paper nearby. Stains on a ceiling can also mean a nest is close. Note what you see and where, from a safe distance, and pass it to us. Do not try to poke or seal cracks yourself, because wasps may chew through to the inside of the room instead.
Farmland around Colyton means barns, stables, sheds and stacked timber, and every one of those can hold a nest. They are used less in summer, so nobody notices until a tractor door is opened or a mower runs past. Hedges, trees and banks hold ground nests too. Livestock, horses and dogs can be badly stung if they stumble across a nest, so keep them well clear.
If you work or live near these places, look before you go in. A line of wasps at a gap near the eaves is a sign to stay clear. We treat nests in outbuildings, trees and the ground as well as in houses, and we can look at awkward access with ladders. We can look at several buildings in one visit if you have a yard, a barn and a house on the same plot.
Call us with the details and we will arrange a visit. The technician treats the nest with a professional product so the colony dies back, and can suggest clearing the old nest and filling the gap. No treatment can stop a queen choosing the same spot next year, but tidy proofing helps. Besides Colyton, we also cover Seaton and Sidbury, and the surrounding EX24 area, so rural addresses are welcome too.
They chew wood to make their paper nests, which is mostly cosmetic, but a large nest in a loft can stain ceilings and make the space unusable in summer. The bigger worry is stings, so the nest should be treated. Treating the nest sooner helps limit any marks.
Spring and early summer, when the nest is small. That said, a nest found in late summer can still be treated. In autumn the colony fades on its own, so ask us whether treatment is still needed. Late summer and autumn nests often need less follow-up, but it is worth checking.
Often, yes. Tell us the height, how the roof sits and what is below, such as a path or a conservatory. The technician will check access first and use the right equipment, or tell you honestly if it needs another approach. Always stay off ladders near a nest.
