Brixham is a working fishing port with holiday lets, guest rooms and tightly packed terraces climbing the hill, and bed bugs find that kind of mix easy. They travel in bags and boxes, then settle into mattress seams and bed frames. If you are waking up bitten, we can remove them with a treatment that covers the bed and everything around it.
This page explains how the job goes, so you know what to expect before we turn up and what is asked of you. We keep it practical and calm, with no scare stories, and we explain each step so that nothing on the day comes as a surprise to you.
Bites in lines or clusters on the arms, neck and shoulders are a clue, but they are not proof, because other insects bite too. Look for tiny rusty spots on the sheets, small dark dots along the seams of the mattress, pale shed skins and sometimes a sweet, musty smell in the room. Any of these together points to bed bugs. If you are unsure, take a clear photo of anything you find and describe it to us.
We confirm the problem when we visit, since a correct diagnosis saves wasted effort. In Brixham, where many homes are older terraces with uneven floors and plenty of gaps around skirting and window frames, bugs can tuck themselves away well out of sight, so we search thoroughly rather than relying on the bed alone. That extra care is what makes the later follow-up visit short.
After the inspection we treat the mattress seams, the bed base, the joints of the frame, the headboard and the edges around the bed, then any furniture and skirting where we found activity. We work around your belongings, and we ask you to keep bagged items sealed until the job is finished. We tell you when the room is safe to use again. Keeping children and pets out of the room during the work is sensible.
Preparation helps a lot. Strip and bag bedding, wash hot, dry on high heat, and clear the floor and drawers beside the bed. If Brixham property you manage is let to visitors, give us the booking dates so the treatment and follow-up can fit around them without rushing the job. A short pause in bookings is far easier than a long one.
A second visit about two weeks later looks for any late hatchers and treats them. After that, keep luggage off beds when you travel, check second-hand furniture before it comes indoors, and look at mattress seams now and then. If you are in TQ5 or nearby, we also cover Paignton, Dartmouth and Torquay, and can arrange a Brixham visit once we know how many rooms are affected.
They can turn up anywhere guests come and go with luggage, so a holiday let is no different from a hotel in that respect. Checking beds between stays and using mattress covers helps you catch them early. If you do find signs, treat the room promptly.
Usually not on its own. Bed bugs hide in frames, headboards, skirting, bedside furniture and gaps in walls. We treat the bed first but also check and treat the surrounding places where we find activity, which is why the preparation and the follow-up both matter.
Strip it, put it straight into a sealed bag, and wash it hot as soon as you can. Dry it on high heat. Do not carry it through the house unbagged, because loose bedding can drop bugs in other rooms before it reaches the machine.
