Signs of Bed Bugs and What to Do Next
Bed bugs are small, flat insects that hide close to where people sleep, and knowing the early signs helps you act before they spread through a home.

Waking up in Paignton with a row of itchy bites is miserable, and finding dark spots along a mattress seam makes it worse. Bed bugs are common anywhere people travel and stay, and a seaside town with plenty of holiday accommodation sees its share. We remove them with a planned treatment of the bed, the room and the furniture nearby.
You do not need to feel embarrassed. We have seen it in tidy homes and busy ones alike, and the approach is the same: find where they are hiding, treat those places thoroughly, and return to check that the problem has gone.
The bed is where the bugs feed, so it is where we spend the most time. We check every seam and fold of the mattress, the slats or base, the screw holes and joints in the frame, and the back of the headboard. Dark flecks, pale shed skins and tiny eggs show us how far the problem has got, and we treat each crack and joint in turn.
From there we widen the search. Bedside tables, wardrobes, picture frames, the edge of the carpet and the skirting boards are all possible hiding places, especially in older rooms where boards have gaps. Paignton has plenty of family homes spreading inland as well as seafront buildings, and the layout of the room affects how we work more than the type of building. We work through each in turn.
Before we arrive, strip the bed and bag everything washable. Wash on a hot cycle and dry on high heat if the fabric allows. Keep the bagged items sealed until we say it is fine to unpack them, otherwise any survivors can simply crawl back out. Empty drawers beside the bed and clear the floor so we can reach the edges. Patience at this stage pays off.
If you run holiday accommodation in Paignton, tell us about bookings so we can plan a sensible time for the work and for the follow-up. Taking a room out of use for a short while is much easier than a spread across the whole property. Please do not use shop-bought foggers or sprays beforehand, as they tend to push bugs into other rooms.
We return roughly two weeks later to look for any new activity, because a few eggs can outlast the first treatment. Between visits, expect to see fewer bites, and do not worry if you spot the odd dead bug. A mattress cover helps you spot anything new. We also cover Torquay, Brixham and Cockington, and our Paignton work includes the TQ3 and TQ4 postcodes.
Many people notice fewer new bites within days, though existing bites can stay itchy for a while. A few bugs may still be around until the follow-up, so keep the room tidy and bedding bagged where advised. If bites carry on after the second visit, contact us.
That is your decision, but being open helps, especially if you share walls. Bed bugs can move between flats through gaps, so neighbours may need to check too. We can explain the signs to look for, in plain language, which you can pass on.
We tell you at the end of the visit when the room is ready. Often it is a matter of hours while treated surfaces dry. Until then, sleep elsewhere, and put freshly washed bedding on only after the room has been cleared for use.
“I'm really happy with your service - I literally only saw one more flea after you visited, and none in the months since. I would give you a five star review. Great job!”
Lucy Hines“Extinguished wasps in very large nest in our roof space. Prompt response to our phone call and job done effectively.”
Alison Falkner“Highly recommend Stuart. He was very efficient, effective, knowledgeable and reassuringly determined. We tried various methods beforehand to solve the problem ourselves but it took Stuart coming in to eradicate it. We wouldn’t use anybody else.”
